TERRY FAWELL: The general practice of law has become very specialized. So if you are getting divorced or you’re seeking custody of your children, it’s important to have an attorney representing you that is aware of the statutes, is aware of the case law. And I think it’s important to have continuity of representation.

It’s nice when the same attorney files the case, represents you throughout, and concludes the case. And the clients feel a connection with you and/or satisfy them. Virtually 100 percent of my practice is family law. I’ve been doing this for over 30 years.

Family law is different from other areas of the law, where it’s more adversary. In family law cases, the parties we hope will continue to have some open line of communication when the case is done because a lot of times they have children. They have to communicate after the case is done, unlike others, the law where the case is done and somebody wins and somebody loses.
